  • These organizations hold the keys to a great local history that is in danger of being lost to future generations.

"In the lifespan of the..."
  •   In the lifespan of the village, the Moweaqua Mining Corporation disaster of 1932 was a defining loss to the social, economic and emotional stability of the community. The generational memory of this event and the supporting physical evidence are now at risk of disappearing forever.

"Using locally owned historic documents"
  •    Using locally owned historic documents, photographs and artifacts, the grant partners will produce a multimedia presentation, website, student curriculum guide, and provide public access through a library exhibit to explain how this single explosion represents a microcosm of Illinois coal mining history.

    •  Develop a recording system for cataloging items at the Historical Society and Coal Mine Museum

  • Students are producing projects using the interviews, historic documents and pictures of Moweaqua from 1890 – 1940.

“History of Moweaqua” for
Gregory Elementary fifth graders
  • Curriculum written for students, including a pamphlet about Moweaqua’s history, power point presentations showing historic pictures
  • Extended activities for the teacher to use in classroom
  • Fieldtrip to include visit to Coal Mine Museum, Historical Society and walking tour of historic Moweaqua sites.

  •     will have a link to “Mining More in Moweaqua” web pages. These pages will include history of the mine, miner biographies, -----------

  •     that will highlight Moweaqua’s mining history.

  • Multimedia presentation
  •   will be produced using historic documents, photographs and artifacts from the partners and the student interviews. This will be available to any organization to share about how the mine affected Moweaqua’s history.

  • People from the community have donated personal pictures to be scanned and these have been put on computer disks.
  • Many of the old pictures that the Historical Society owns have been put on disk.
